![]() ![]() There are also corrections for product density and temperature. Often there are corrections needed at low elevations for piping or floating roof displacement. For some tanks that are lap welded or riveted, the stacking of shell plates in or out affects the liquid volume. Note that a tank actually gets slightly larger as the liquid head increases and particularly for large tanks, the gallons a tank holds tens to increase as the tank height increases. The charts are sometimes made by calculating how much the tank should hold and sometimes by actual measurements. Many have liquid volume data for every 1/16" of an inch of tank height. They are usually kept in the terminal operator's office. These tables or charts are very accurate because they are used for custody transfer (buying and selling) the liquid in the tank. When I refer to strapping tables, I mean pages of data that list how many gallons or barrels a vertical above-ground storage tank holds at various levels.
